Halloween, my Recommendations for a Sleepless Night

Written by: Vanessa Duchel Montréal - October 26, 2018

Halloween is coming, my little terror-loving monsters.

I don’t know about you, but it’s my favourite holiday.

First, because I’m an inveterate fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, second, because my inner Charlize Theron loves to dress up like someone else for parties.

I’ve decided to divide my article in smaller categories to satisfy all my little zombies.

Let’s start with haunted houses. I’ve done a bit of research to steer you in the direction of the most terrifying places. Here’s my top 5:

1. The Village Québécois d’Antan, Drummondville

From September 28th to November 3rd, this place becomes a huge haunted village with a three-kilometre path and about a hundred actors. You’ll find around thirty activities there and whether you go with your family or whether you’re over sixteen years old and want to shit yourself a little bit, you’ll find something that works for you!

Rate: $45 for a thematic three-course dinner and access to all activities

2. The Atlantide Haunted Mansion, Saint-Calixte

According to their website, this is the number 1 scary attraction in Canada. Not bad! More than sixty actors are waiting for you across the three different courses: the family course, the moderate one and the extreme course! This one will make you go across the three floors of the Haunted Mansion, the sewerage system and the forest. There is also a free daycare centre on-site (but I don’t know if I’d let my kids go there… apparently, it’s also haunted…) and you can also rent a cottage! They’ve thought of everything!

Rate: $19.99 + taxes

3. Délirium, parcours de peur, Trois-Rivières

The POP museum and Personare have created a horror trail in the Old Prison of Trois-Rivières. As you can see in the title, you’ll come across insane and deranged people in the jail’s hallways. For your own sanity, I hope you won’t go on your own.

Rate: $29

4. Malefycia Zone 4, Montreal

I visited this one with two of my friends. Many times, one of them almost cried. The atmosphere is creepy as fuck and the visit is, let’s say, VERY immersive and stressful. For its fourth edition, Malefycia focuses on military archives: the nastiest experiences and forms of torture. I recommend wearing clothes that are more comfortable than stylish. You also have to be over 18 years old because vulgarity is in the limelight!

Rate: Thursday and Sunday: $45 Friday and Saturday: $55

5. The Horror Fair, Laval

The Horror Fair takes place at the Centropolis and is a multi-sensory experience. Its concept is similar to the one of escape rooms, they have sixteen rooms and scary mazes. Softies and brave should both find a course adapted to their taste.

Rate: $16 + taxes for 12 years old and under, $20 + taxes for adults

Honourable mention to La Maison hantée Bédard in Longueuil that will raise funds for Opération Enfant Soleil on October 31st from 5:30 pm. You can visit their haunted house and leave a voluntary contribution to the charity.

Address: 2568 Bédard, Longueuil

The famous Rocky Horror Picture Show will be featured at the Cinema Imperial on October 26th, 27th and 31st. If you’ve never seen the RHPS before, here’s what you can expect: a live performance with a theatre company that reenacts the movie at the same time as it’s being shown on the screen. It’s a big party where everyone is dressed up as its favourite character and interacts with each other. You have to shout particular sentences, throw things on stage (yes, there’s even a list on the website telling you what to bring) and costumes to wear.

Rate: $19.95 + taxes and service (advanced price) or $21.95 +taxes and service (door price).

If you prefer to stay in the comfort of your home and if you love paranormal, disappearance stories and conspiracy theories, the youtuber Victoria Charlton, in the days leading up to Halloween, has seven horror-themed days for you! You don’t want to miss it!

You might also want to binge listen every episode of the podcasts Distorsion and Ars Moriendi—they’re all a bit disturbing.

I wanted to end this post with what NOT to do on Halloween. I know we’re probably all old enough to know that some things should stay out of our heads during the day of the dead, but prevention is better than cure.

  • Do not walk on your own in dark corners, some ill-intentioned people might use Halloween as a pretext to wear a mask or hide.
  • Do not play Ouija, guys. Nope. There’s no need to explain. It’s not because it’s the day of the dead that you have to wake them up to celebrate.
  • Do not dress up as a person of colour if you aren’t one. No black face please and thank you.
  • Scan your candies (or the kids’).
  • Do not invite anyone in your home when you’re giving away candy.
  • Alert the authorities if you see something shady in the streets (an adult trying to get close to the children, vans or suspicious-looking cars).
  • Do not force your friends to do something they don’t want to do or are scared to do, even if it’s Halloween.
  • Do not sacrifice animals or children, please (I think you already knew that).
  • Do not visit/vandalize cemeteries even if they do it in horror movies.
  • Do not knock on doors if the lights are off.
  • Being naked is not a costume.

There you have it, I hope you have enough ideas for the amazing month of October!

Have fun, have a wander around and enjoy life while you can!

Bye (cue the Thriller video diabolical laugh).

For me, holding a mic or pencil is basically the same thing. Yes, I was on Star Académie (F.V. American Idol). No, I didn’t release an album afterwards. No, you haven’t seen me on Occupation Double (comparable to Big Brother). However, I’m still single!
